These heron chicks in Tree E Nest 1 were first of the season, hatching sometime between April 9 and 12, 2016.
In this clip, the heron chicks are seen sparring with each other, which is common chick behaviour. Eggs hatch one to two days apart which allows there to be an older (and larger) chick amongst the siblings. If a food shortage was to occur sometime in the cycle, this will allow the older chick’s survival by eliminating its younger siblings (siblicide). You can also take note of the third egg present which is due to hatch any day from when this video was uploaded.

Eventually you will see the heron parent “sit” on the chicks. For the first two weeks, either one of the parents help regulate the temperature of the chicks (brooding).
