Hey everyone. I don’t know about you, but I love cycling.
However, if you have spent any time cycling around your neighborhood town, or city, you’ll know one of the most anxiety inducing parts is dealing with drivers in cars.
Not only are they polluting and noisy, knowing that they weigh thousands of pounds and have a potential kinetic force that could seriously injure me, my friends, or my family is enough to get my heart racing.
So when, in response to COVID-19, the Vancouver Park Board closed a main road in Stanley Park to cars and opened it to people who were cycling or rolling, many people I knew were super happy and were able to enjoy the park in a way they never had before. I remember doing rides and seeing the amount of children and families enjoying the outdoors and in a safe, more distanced manner.
Since then, orange cones were added to allow for one lane of motor vehicles and have bikes on rollers on the side. This wasn’t ideal, but it was significantly better than nothing.
Now, that has changed and the two lane road is (mostly) reserved for cars. At least, I wouldn’t take my family along those roads even though we are technically allowed to.
This video is our last ride before the cones are gone and the bike lane is removed. For now, we can go back on the seawall but we think we can imagine a better future for Stanley Park. One that is cleaner, less noisy, more sustainable and more accessible.
