CF Chinook Centre

Chinook Centre (corporately styled as “CF Chinook Centre”) is the largest shopping mall in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It is located near the geographic centre of the city on Macleod Trail, north of Glenmore Trail about 5 km (3.1 mi) south of downtown, and three blocks west of the Chinook C-Train station. The mall is operated by Cadillac Fairview.

CF Chinook Centre covers (1,377,768 square feet (127,998.8 m2)) of space, and includes three major anchor stores (Hudson’s Bay, Nordstrom, and Saks Fifth Avenue) and 250 stores and restaurants. As the largest shopping destination in Calgary, it offers a range of mid-priced retailers as well as higher-end offerings in a luxury wing anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue. Junior anchors include Sport Chek, H&M, Old Navy, and Chapters.

The centre also includes a professional tower, bowling alley, 900-seat Dining Hall, and the 16-screen Scotiabank Theatre Chinook.

The focal point of the mall is a four-storey-high rotunda, including a time capsule at the centre’s axis.

CF Chinook Centre offer more than 257 brand name stores – outlets, department, fashion, traditional and more.

Chinook Centre was opened in 1960, it was designed as an open-air complex, the mall was anchored by Woodward’s, Hot Renfrew, a bowling alley and a branch of the Calgary Public Library. In the mid 1960s Chinook Centre (used to be called Sears) was extended by a separated mall, Southridge, was opened across the street from Chinook. There were approximately 30 other stores. Sears and Southridge began to operate together in 1974. The new, largest mall was renamed Chinook Ridge Shopping Centre. In the late 1990s the complex was rebuilt in three phases – business, shops (added brend new stores as a Sears, the Bay and Zellers), larger entertainment place by IMAX screen. In this period was the Chinook public library brand closed. In September, 2010 was a major expansion to the mall was opened, adding 180,000 sq ft. 17,000 m2) of new retail space. New stores included Apple Store, Abercrombie & Fitch, Anthropologie, Armani Exchange, BCBG Max Azria, Coach, Geox, Guess, Harry Rosen, Lacoste, Oakley etc.

Bankers Hall

Bankers Hall is a building complex located in downtown Calgary, Alberta, which includes twin 52-storey office towers (197 metres high), designed by the architectural firm Cohos Evamy in postmodern architectural style.

The first building, known as Bankers Hall East, is located at 855 2nd Street SW and was completed in 1989. It was followed in 2000 by Bankers Hall West, at 888 3rd Street SW. After its completion, they became the tallest twin buildings in Canada.

Both buildings contain four-level podiums with an upscale retail gallery connected to the Plus 15 skywalk network. The Core Shopping Centre, the largest shopping complex in downtown Calgary, is directly connected via Plus 15. The northeast corner of the complex incorporates the historic Hollinsworth Building, whose intricate terra cotta facade has been fully restored.

The distinctive crowns of the buildings are intended to resemble cowboy hats when viewed from afar; Bankers Hall West is topped by a gold roof structure while the East building’s crown is in silver. A white cowboy hat has long been an iconic symbol of Calgary, being portrayed on the city’s flag, and presented as gifts to foreign dignitaries by the civic government at “white hatting ceremonies”.

For tenants and people who work in and around Bankers Hall, there is also a fitness centre called Bankers Hall Club. Bankers Hall Club occupies the old space of the Bankers Hall Five movie theater which was open from 1990 to 2001.
